So where can you travel overland? The answer is almost anywhere in the world, but the three big destinations for overland tours are Africa, South America and Asia. We have had plenty of people join tours on all three continents, while others chose just to do the continent that most interested them. But how exactly do they differ?
Asia & the Silk Road
It was on the overland route from London to India that overlanding as we know it today has its origins and though the roads in parts are a lot easier now this part of the world still offers some of the best overlanding around. These are the lands which Marco Polo and his fellow early explorers came back with epic tales of majestic mountains, opulent cities, strange tribes and kingdoms, sultanates and khans and stories of the riches to be had - the Silk Road's reputation grew and grew. Today to overland along this epic ancient caravan route allows you to have some idea of what it must have been like for these early travellers, though we do it in a lot more comfort. The history and ancient cities and towns are sure to amaze. But more than that this part of the world has a lot to offer from the many interesting local people you will meet, exotic foods, different cultures to amazing landscapes and natural beauty. An overland journey along these routes has so much to offer.
South America is an incredible continent which offers a diverse and exotic range of experiences, from volcanoes to glaciers, jungle to high altitude grass lands, wildlife and wild Carnival, fascinating cultures and all the adventure activities and trekking you could ever want. South America has now developed to be possibly the second most overlanded region in the world after Africa.
Africa has become a overlanding paradise and offers some of the greatest overland trips available with the chance of heading of on an epic 9 month London to Cape town down the Western side and then from Cape Town to Cairo along the eastern sides with heaps of twists and turn to see the best this exotic continent has to offer. Part of these routes can be tough going but there is a overland journey to suit everybody available in Africa. With its fantastic wildlife, diverse people and cultures and its infrutraucture of great camps and lodges Africa is a great overlanding destination and offers some of the best value.
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain
